šŸ‘‰ AirAsia Cabin Baggage Rules: What You Need to Know āœˆļø

As a former Customer Experience Executive at AirAsia for nearly a decade, I’ve answered the same FAQs countless times—including from my own relatives and friends. Some questions may seem simple, but they’re genuine concerns for many. So, let me help clear things up!

One of the most common questions I get, especially during school holidays, is: ā€œCan I bring more than 7kg of cabin baggage?ā€.

In this blog post, I’ll simplify the cabin baggage rulesĀ to make them easier to understand. I’ll break down the FAQ from this pageĀ for your reference.

āœ… Each passenger gets a FREE 7kgĀ cabin baggage allowance, whether it’s one bag or two. You can choose to bring:

• 1 cabin bagĀ (must not exceed 7kg); OR

• 1 cabin bag + 1 small bagĀ (laptop bag/small backpack/šŸ‘œ handbag, or tote bag) as long as it’s a small bag, total combined weight must not exceed 7kg.

šŸ“£ And what about bag size and dimensions?

Think about the overhead compartment and the space under the seat in front of you—they’re small! Your bags must fit safely so you and other passengers can sit comfortably. Make sure your main cabin bag and small bag fit withinĀ these dimensions:

Main Cabin Bag Size:Ā 56cm (H) x 23cm (W) x 36cm (L)

Small Bag Size:Ā 40cm (H) x 30cm (W) x 10cm (L)

To avoid any issues at the airport, I always recommend measuring your bag at home before heading to the airport. A simple ruler or a measuring tape can save you from unexpected baggage fees!

What if I need more than 7kg?

You can purchase Xtra Carry-OnĀ to increase your carry-on allowance from 7kg to 14kg. This means, you’ll be allowed to bring a total of 14kg of cabin baggage for that flight.

With Xtra Carry-On, you can bring two cabin bags as long as their combined weight doesn’t exceed 14kg. One bag can weigh up to 10kg, while the other must stay within the remaining limit. Check the schedule below for details:

If the option to purchase ā€˜Xtra Carry-On’ doesn’t appear, it means either the allowance has already sold outĀ OR your flight destination does not permit more than 7kg of carry-on per passenger.

According to the AirAsiaĀ FAQ page, Xtra Carry-On is not available for all QZ Indonesia domestic flights (QZ is the airline code for Indonesia domestic flights).

And honestly, that makes total sense! Imagine if everyone brought up to 14kg of cabin baggage—where would we even sit? šŸ˜’ We’d be crammed in like sardines, wedged between overflowing bags! Airlines set these limits for a reason—to keep things comfortable and prevent the cabin from turning into a chaotic luggage jungle.

Let me share a story to help you understand why passengers are discouraged from carrying more than what is permitted by the airline.

I once witnessed a fellow female passenger on my flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sibu struggling with her shopping bags. But here’s the problem: every overhead compartment was already packed with other passengers’ belongings, leaving her with no space for her shopping haul. 🫣

So there she was, stuck holding her bags on her lap for the entire flight. I couldn’t help but feel bad for her—it must have been so uncomfortable! A little extra cabin space would’ve made all the difference.

I hope this short story, along with the FAQ breakdown, helps you understand the rules better. Wishing you a smooth and happy journey! šŸ˜Šāœˆļø
