Exploring London by Tube: A Cashless Journey

It has been a while! I have been busy, though, not from travelling (not yet!). Highkey hope the second half of 2025 will be a busy time for travelling for me - but until then, let me share couple of observations which I think will benefit my fellow Malaysians who are flying to London's Heathrow from Kuala Lumpur soon.

The Cashless Experience

London, a city bustling with history and modernity, is known for its iconic red buses, black cabs, and, most notably, its extensive underground railway system—the Tube (pronounce: cheewwbb innitttt). As a visitor, navigating this vibrant city can be an adventure in itself. On my recent trips, I discovered the sheer convenience of traveling around London using just my credit card and smartphone, making my experience not only cashless but also seamless.

Gone are the days when you needed to carry wads of cash or queue up to purchase paper tickets. With the advent of contactless payment technology, getting around London has never been easier. Simply tapping my credit card or iPhone (Applepay) at the ticket barriers allowed me to move effortlessly from one location to another without the hassle of searching for change or worrying about losing a paper ticket. The Oyster card, once a staple for London travellers, now finds stiff competition from this new wave of technology, offering the same daily capping benefits without the need for a physical card.

A Note on Accessibility

While the Tube offers unmatched convenience for many, I can't help but notice some of London tube stations are quite inaccessible for those with limited mobility. Although some stations are equipped with elevators and ramps, a significant number still pose challenges for travellers who require step-free access. That being said, it would be ideal to plan accordingly if you are planning take the tube on days you need to drag your luggages with you.

Accessing the Tube from Heathrow Terminal 4

Speaking of dragging luggages, the convenience begun immediately from the airport and I love that about London, honestly. Flying with Malaysia Airlines from Kuala Lumpur, your plane will land at London's Heathrow Terminal 4 (Heathrow has 4 terminals, oddly enough, the terminal does not start with terminal 1).

Arriving at Heathrow Terminal 4, I was presented with two convenient options for getting into central London: the Heathrow Express and the Piccadilly Line. Each offered a unique experience, catering to different preferences and priorities.

The Heathrow Express Experience

On my first trip to London, I was probably overthinking. Hence why I chose to take the Heathrow Express. This option is the next most expensive option after taxi for commuting from Heathrow to central London. But, if speed and comfort are what you're looking for, the Heathrow Express is a fantastic option. This dedicated train service connects Heathrow directly to Paddington Station in just 15 minutes. It's a similar service to our KLIA Express. The trains are spacious, with ample luggage storage and comfortable seating. The service operates frequently, ensuring minimal wait times.

The Piccadilly Line Journey

Alternatively, for travelers seeking a more economical route, the Piccadilly Line provides a direct connection from Heathrow to various central London destinations. This route, while slower than the Heathrow Express, offers its own advantages. The Piccadilly Line is part of the extensive London Underground network, meaning you can directly access numerous Tube stations without needing to transfer. The journey provides a more authentic London experience, as you share the ride with locals and fellow travelers alike. If you're not in a rush (the trip takes approximately 50 minutes) this is the best option in terms of cost-effectiveness and convenience.

The Elizabeth Line Journey to Heathrow Terminal 4

For those traveling from central London to Heathrow Terminal 4, the Elizabeth Line connects Paddington Station to Heathrow, providing a seamless journey that caters to both business and leisure travelers. On my most recent trip, my sister and I were staying at the Premier Inn's London Paddington (Paddington Station) hotel and the station was literally across the road - senang wei! My flight back to KL was at 11am and although some platforms were closed that morning (I reached the station at 6.30am) but I managed to get to Heathrow by 9am and just in time for my flight. The train journey from Paddington station to Heathrow took about 30 minutes.

Personally, I'd choose this option if I have the chance to visit London again. The journey time is about the same with Heathrow Express but the Elizabeth Line is definitely a cheaper option between these two.
